How the landscape changed for creatives

"I used to be very goal-oriented, and my coaching has evolved as the landscape has evolved. One of the really big kickers for creators was COVID. For performing artists, there was nothing for two years, and that whole industry has taken a long time to regenerate.

Visual artists did pretty well, because they were at home in their garages or studios, potting and creating, expanding and getting online, doing a whole lot of things they normally wouldn't do."

The challenge that never changes

"Whether we're talking 10 years ago, 20 years ago or now, the big challenge for creatives is being able to put themselves out there.

Performing artists are really interesting to me. They get on stage, they're in their zone, they just do their thing, and you think, wow, they're incredible. But a lot of them are actually introverted. So when it comes to promoting themselves, independent of an agency or a company, that's a real challenge."

Being good at what you do isn't the hard part

Monica's point applies well beyond the arts. Plenty of brilliant people are quietly excellent and completely invisible.
