“YouTube SEO, or search engine optimisation, is all about making your videos more discoverable in search results, not just on YouTube but also on Google.

Remember, YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world, right after Google. So mastering this skill is absolutely crucial. The key to YouTube SEO lies in understanding how the platform’s algorithm works. YouTube’s algorithm considers various factors when ranking videos, such as relevance, watch time, engagement, and even your channel’s overall performance.

Optimising your content isn’t just about keywords. It’s about creating high-quality, engaging videos that people will want to watch and share. So, let’s start with the foundation of any good SEO strategy – of course, our keyword research. This is where it all begins. Just like with traditional SEO, identifying the right keywords for your YouTube videos is absolutely essential.

These are the terms and phrases that people are typing into the search bar when they’re looking for content like yours. Now, here’s how you can approach keyword research for YouTube. Start by typing in a few words related to your video’s topic into the YouTube search bar. Now, pay really close attention to the auto-complete suggestions that pop up because these are real search queries from users.

So Google is essentially giving you a silver platter and saying, hey, these are the search terms that people are searching into YouTube when they’re looking for your particular topic. These suggestions can give you insight into what people are searching for. You can also leverage tools like TubeBuddy or vidIQ. These are fantastic for finding popular keywords, assessing your competition and also discovering related tags.

Now they’ll provide you with metrics like search volume and competition score, which can really help you choose the best keywords for your video. You also want to check out the competition. So look at the top-ranking videos for your target keywords. You want to analyse their titles, their descriptions, as well as their tags. What type of keywords are they using, and how can you create content that adds more value or a unique perspective than what your competitors are doing?”
