Listen to the episode
In this episode I'm joined by Kirsty King, a gut-health-obsessed naturopath on a mission to make the world a healthier and happier place. Her own journey began with gut issues that were uncomfortable and at times embarrassing, until a naturopath started her on the path to healing and a lasting interest in food as medicine.
Show notes
Kirsty went on to complete a four-year Bachelor of Health Science majoring in naturopathy, spending her final year under the mentorship of Dr Andrea Robertson, an osteopath, naturopath and nutritionist. She now works alongside her at Southside Clinic in Unley, Adelaide.
Away from the clinic, you'll find her in her veggie garden, curled up with her cat, or in the kitchen cooking a good home-cooked meal.

"Our threat might be an inbox full of emails we know we won't finish by the end of the day, but the body thinks it's a threat to our life."

In Kirsty's words
Why small business owners can't switch off
"With small business owners, we're just on the go all the time. One of the most common things I hear and see is sleep being affected, because our brain is going all the time. We're sitting in that fight-or-flight nervous system, and we lose our ability to rest, unwind and go off to sleep.
That has a flow-on effect to so many other areas. The gut is the area I have a big interest in, and if we're not sitting in the rest-and-digest nervous system, which we should be most of the time, those normal bodily functions can't operate properly."
When an inbox feels like a threat
"Our body literally thinks there's a threat. Our threat might be an inbox full of emails we know we won't finish by the end of the day, but the body thinks it's a threat to our life. So it kicks into gear and only prioritises the things that keep us alive. Rest and relaxation aren't a priority. Even short-term memory isn't a priority."
