Welcome to Episode 2 in Season 3

Watch or listen

In this episode I'm joined by Jerome Lamarque, who shares his journey from confidence coach for athletes to teaching business owners how to move from thinking like a technician to leading a team.

Show notes

Jerome talks about understanding how people think and why they do what they do. He introduces his leadership archetypes, the farmer, the hunter, the warrior and the athlete, and explains how to work with your own style rather than against it. He also covers the blocks his clients most often hit, including self-sabotage and the fear of success.

"I had that light bulb moment of why people make things complicated, when things are really simple. I thought that was common sense. I didn't realise it was my gift."

In Jerome's words

The client who couldn't afford to keep training

"I came to Australia in 2010, and by accident I was training someone who said to me, I can't carry on working with you. I asked why, and he said his business wasn't doing very well and he was really struggling financially.

He had a few sessions left, because he used to buy blocks. So I said, next time you come, we'll train in the park and then have a coffee. Can you bring your business plan? I was fascinated, because sports psychology taught me so much about planning and preparation. He said, I haven't got one.

That was really strange to me, that you'd start a business without a plan. So we had that coffee and I took him through some things. He went away, did them, and came back and said, I'm carrying on working with you, you can be my trainer. I asked why. He said, that stuff we did, I applied it and it worked."

Realising it was a gift

"I had that light bulb moment of why people make things complicated, when things are really simple. I thought that was common sense. I didn't realise it was my gift.

Studying sports psychology and working with elite athletes, you enter a world of focus, being organised and performing consistently, and you think that's normal. It was normal to me. I didn't realise most people weren't like that, and most business owners weren't like that."

The plan most businesses don't have

Jerome's client had no business plan. In my world, it's usually a visibility plan: plenty of effort, plenty of posting, no strategy underneath it.

If that sounds familiar, The Visibility Bootcamp™ is four weeks to build one.
