Creating a Compelling Brand Storytelling Strategy

Why your story is the one thing competitors and AI can't copy, and how to build a strategy around it.

The short version

  • Facts inform. Stories are what people remember and repeat.
  • Every business needs three stories: where you came from, who you've helped, and what you stand for.
  • In a sea of AI-written sameness, your real experience is your point of difference.
  • A strategy means telling the same core story consistently, not a new one every week.

Most business websites say roughly the same thing. Quality service, years of experience, customer focus. None of it is wrong, and none of it is memorable.

What people remember is a story: the moment something went wrong, the turning point, the customer whose problem finally got solved. This article covers why storytelling matters more now than it ever has, the three stories every business needs, and how to turn them into a strategy rather than the occasional nice post.

Why storytelling matters more now

AI can now write a competent blog post, a polished About page and a week of social captions in minutes. That's useful, but it has a side effect: more and more content looks and sounds the same. I call it the sea of sameness.

The one thing AI can't produce is your experience. The client you turned around, the mistake that changed how you work, the reason you started in the first place. Those stories are what make a business recognisable, and they're increasingly what makes it stand out.

In a world where AI can make everyone sound the same, the person is the one thing that can't be copied.

What makes a business story work

Every good story, in a novel or on a website, has the same three parts.

Someone to care about

Usually that's your customer, not you. The best business stories put the reader in the main role, so they can see themselves in it.

A problem worth solving

The tension is what holds attention. Without a real problem, there's no story, just a description.

A change

Something is different at the end: a result, a new way of seeing things, a decision made. That's the part people remember and repeat.

The three stories every business needs

Story one

Where you came from

Why you started, what you were frustrated by, and what you set out to do differently. This is the story that builds trust in who you are.

Story two

Who you've helped

Real customers, real problems and real results. This is the story that shows you can do what you say.

Story three

What you stand for

The values and point of view that shape how you work. This is the story that makes the right people choose you over everyone else.

An example from my own business

My origin story is short. I left corporate life, built my first website, and nothing happened. Nobody could find it. That's how I discovered SEO, and it's why I do what I do.

It works because it has all three parts: someone to care about, a problem, and a change. It's also true, which is why I can tell it the same way on my website, on my podcast and on stage.

How to build your storytelling strategy

Know who the story is for

Start with the people you want to reach. What are they worried about, what have they tried, and what would change for them if they worked with you?

Find your core story

Write your origin story in five sentences or fewer. If you can't tell it briefly, it isn't clear yet.

Collect your proof stories

Keep a running list of client wins, turning points and lessons. Most businesses have dozens and have written down none of them.

Decide where each story lives

Your origin story belongs on your About page. Client stories suit case studies, reviews and social posts. Your values story belongs everywhere, from your homepage to how you answer the phone.

Tell it consistently

A story only works if it's told the same way across your website, social media, podcasts and conversations. Repetition is what makes it recognisable.

Storytelling and search

Stories aren't only good for people. Search engines and AI tools increasingly reward content that shows genuine, firsthand experience, and stories are exactly that. A detailed client story, told in your own words, is far more likely to be trusted and quoted than a generic list of tips.

I cover how this fits into the bigger picture in SEO and content marketing: how they work together.

How to know it's working

The clearest sign is when people start repeating your story back to you. Enquiries that mention a particular post, a podcast episode or a client example. Comments and shares that go beyond a like. Clients who say "I knew you were the right person when I read about…".

Those are harder to track than clicks, so write them down when they happen. They'll tell you which stories are landing.

Frequently asked questions

What is brand storytelling?

Brand storytelling is using real stories, about where you came from, who you've helped and what you stand for, to help people understand and remember your business, rather than relying on facts and features alone.

Do I need to share personal stories?

Only as much as you're comfortable with. Client stories and your point of view can carry a strong brand on their own. What matters is that the stories are true and specific.

Can AI write my brand story?

AI can help you shape and edit it, but it can't supply the experience. The details that make a story believable have to come from you.

How often should I tell my story?

More often than feels natural. You'll be tired of your story long before your audience has heard it enough times to remember it.
