How YouTube SEO works

YouTube SEO, or search engine optimisation, is all about making your videos more discoverable in search results, not just on YouTube but also on Google. Remember, YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world, right after Google, so mastering this skill is absolutely crucial.

The key to YouTube SEO lies in understanding how the platform's algorithm works. It considers factors such as relevance, watch time, engagement and even your channel's overall performance. Optimising your content isn't just about keywords. It's about creating high-quality, engaging videos that people want to watch and share.

Start with keyword research

Just like traditional SEO, identifying the right keywords for your YouTube videos is essential. These are the terms people type into the search bar when they're looking for content like yours.

Start by typing a few words about your video's topic into the YouTube search bar and pay close attention to the autocomplete suggestions, because these are real searches from real users. You're essentially being handed a list of what people are looking for on your topic.

You can also use tools like TubeBuddy or vidIQ to find popular keywords, assess your competition and discover related tags. They show metrics like search volume and competition score, which help you choose the best keywords for each video.

Check out the competition

Look at the top-ranking videos for your target keywords and analyse their titles, descriptions and tags. What keywords are they using, and how can you create content that adds more value or a unique perspective?
