The Yoast myth

Installing a plugin is not doing SEO

The most common thing I hear from WordPress owners is that SEO is "handled", because a plugin is installed and the lights are green.

An SEO plugin gives you the fields to fill in. It doesn't decide what your pages should target, write them, fix what's slowing your site down, or work out why three of your pages are competing for the same search. That part is still a person's job.

What's involved

WordPress SEO, properly done

Every engagement starts with an audit, because the priorities are different for every site. What follows usually includes:

Technical audit

Indexing, crawl issues, redirects, broken links, duplicate URLs and anything quietly stopping your pages from being found.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Themes, page builders and plugins all add weight. Finding what's slowing the site down, and what can safely go.

Keyword and intent research

What your buyers actually search, matched to the right page, so your pages stop competing with each other.

On-page optimisation

Titles, descriptions, headings, internal links and image text, written for people first and search engines second.

Content and structure

Which pages you need, which should be merged, and what to write next, based on the questions your customers ask.

AI search readiness

Clear answers, structured data and consistent information, so ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI summaries can quote you.

Local SEO

Google Business Profile, listings and reviews, when nearby customers matter to your business.

Reporting that means something

What happened, why, and what's next. Enquiries, not just rankings.

WordPress specifics

Where WordPress sites lose visibility

Page builders. Divi, Elementor and similar tools are excellent for design and heavy on code. That weight shows up in your load times, particularly on mobile.

Plugin sprawl. Every plugin adds scripts, and old ones add risk. Sites that have been running for years often carry plugins nobody uses any more.

Archives, tags and attachments. WordPress generates pages automatically. Left unchecked, they create thin, near-duplicate content competing with the pages you care about.

Redesigns and migrations. This is where hard-won visibility disappears. A new site launched without a plan can undo years of progress in a weekend.

Hosting and caching. Cheap hosting is usually slow hosting, and caching that's set up badly can stop search engines seeing your latest content.

Who this suits

Best fit for established businesses

Two or three years in

The product or service works and clients are happy. Not enough of the right people know you exist.

You'd rather hand it over

You don't want to learn SEO, AEO and AI search. You want someone who already has.

You have a team, but no specialist

Your marketing person is capable and stretched. Search is the gap.

You're planning a redesign

The cheapest time to protect your visibility is before the new site is built, not after.

How it works

Four steps, no mystery

1. Discovery call. A conversation about your business, your customers and what's not working. No pitch.

2. Audit and plan. A full look at your site and your search performance, and a plan in priority order, in plain English.

3. The work. Technical fixes, on-page work and content, with you always knowing what's happening and why.

4. Reporting and review. Monthly reporting that connects what was done to what changed, and what comes next.

WordPress SEO questions, answered

Isn't WordPress already good for SEO?

WordPress gives you a solid foundation: clean code, editable titles and descriptions, and easy publishing. That's the starting line, not the finish. What you do with it decides whether you're found.

I have Yoast or Rank Math installed. Isn't that enough?

Those plugins give you the fields and a traffic-light score. They don't tell you which pages to build, what your customers search, or why your site is slow. A green light means the field is filled in, not that the page will rank.

Do you work with Divi and Elementor sites?

Yes. Most of the sites I work on are built with a page builder. The design stays yours; the work is making sure it performs.

I'm redesigning my website. When should we talk?

Before the build, ideally. Protecting your existing visibility through a redesign is straightforward when it's planned and expensive to repair afterwards.

How long before I see results?

Technical fixes can show up within weeks. Content and authority take longer, usually several months, and they keep compounding. Anyone promising faster is overselling.

Do I have to commit to a long contract?

No. Start with a discovery call and an audit, and decide from there what makes sense for your business.
